There are two main classifications of characters, Human and Locust Horde.

Coalition of Ordered Governments (or COGs)

These are the characters through which all of the single console campaign is played. The single console campaign can be played with up to two players. The two main characters are Marcus Fenix and Dom.

Locust Horde

These are the enemy of the Humans that have invaded. Some have a human-like form, but many do not. Not much is known about them; they may just be waging war for no good reason.

Stranded

Humans who survived the destruction of their cities. Some of them have banded together to defended form settlements. Most of them generally dislike COGs as they destroyed their cities and homes in futile attempts to eliminate the Locust there in the first place.
