You play Gears of War as Marcus Fenix.

Marcus Fenix defied orders in a failed attempt at saving his father Adam Fenix, a famed military scientist. He was sentenced to 40 years in Jacinto Maximum Security Penitentiary for dereliction of duty. The game begins with Marcus being broken out of prison by his friend Dom after the Locust Horde overrun the prison.

When the game begins Marcus is a Private, but is promoted to Sergeant after Lt.Kim's death (about half-way through Act 1).
