MAVRIX by Matt Jones – Review (Early Access)

MAVRIX by Matt Jones is an ambitious MTB simulator built by riders for riders. Even in its Early Access form, it stands out as one of the most authentic takes on virtual mountain biking. Rather than relying on arcade-like shortcuts, it replicates real handling through a split control system: the left stick steers the handlebars, the right stick shifts body weight, and the brakes are divided into front and rear for precise control.

This design means that actions like bunny hops, stoppies, or scrubs require correct timing and coordination. Players who are used to pressing a single jump button will face a learning curve, but the payoff is a much deeper sense of accomplishment when mastering a trail.

The game’s open world acts as a true MTB playground. Chairlifts take riders to the top, and a wide variety of downhill routes, jump lines, slopestyle tracks, and technical trails bring them back down. Discovering new sections gradually fills out the map, and certain routes can be raced on global leaderboards.

Career mode adds structure to the free riding. Completing sponsor challenges unlocks real-world brand contracts, and the in-game currency, Mula, can be spent on gear, bike paint jobs, and race kits. The shop is always accessible via fast travel, making upgrades convenient.

Early Access limitations are unfortunately visible. Some customization features remain locked, certain pro riders are still “coming soon,” and performance optimization is ongoing. On powerful PCs, the game runs well, but on the Steam Deck it currently struggles at around 11 FPS. The developers have acknowledged this and are working on improvements.

In terms of gameplay style, Mavrix differs from more arcade-focused titles like Descenders. It leans towards simulation, rewarding careful brake management, weight shifting, and line choice over pure speed and trick spam. That doesn’t mean stunts are absent — the system allows flips, whips, and stylish runs — but they feel more earned due to the control precision required.

One of the game’s strengths is how it blends competitive and creative riding. Players can chase leaderboard times or simply explore trails, adding personal flair to every run. The commentary from Rob Warner injects personality into races, and the real-brand sponsorship system gives progression a grounded feel.

Pros:

  • Highly authentic MTB control system
  • Large open world with varied trail types
  • Career mode with real brands and meaningful goals
  • Balance between competitive play and free exploration

Cons:

  • Steep learning curve for newcomers
  • Performance issues on weaker hardware and Steam Deck
  • Some features still unavailable in Early Access

MAVRIX by Matt Jones: Overall, Mavrix already delivers one of the most realistic and satisfying MTB experiences on the market. With further optimization and added content, it has the potential to become the go-to game for both mountain biking enthusiasts and players looking for a skill-based, technical sports title.
