At first, Edge of Sanity might look like another survival game in a snowy, remote setting, but it quickly proves to be something special. Picture yourself thrown into the icy wilderness of Alaska, struggling not just with the freezing temperatures but also with your own sanity as you encounter nightmarish creatures.
I’ve played it on Steam Deck as it’s Deck-verified at release day, yay!
From the start, you’ll notice that this game is different. The 2D graphics are hand-crafted and create a chilling atmosphere that feels both familiar and unsettling. The snowy landscapes and dark caves look beautifully eerie, making every step feel dangerous. The sound design adds to this feeling with creepy noises and whispers that make you think you’re never alone.

In Edge of Sanity, you’re part of a resupply team sent to help scientists in Alaska. When you arrive, you find the place deserted and quickly realize that you’re not alone—there are horrifying creatures lurking about. Your group gets split up, and you have to set up a temporary camp to figure out what happened.
You’ll need to explore dangerous caves, old mines, and hidden labs to find resources and clues about the mysterious PRISM organization and their dark experiments. Each day is a fight for survival. You must carefully manage your supplies and your sanity, which can quickly deteriorate if you’re not careful.

The game plays a bit like Darkest Dungeon, but in real-time and with a focus on survival. You’ll be constantly worried about whether your team will make it back from supply runs. You have to upgrade your base and craft items to help keep your survivors alive, but it’s clear that the developers expect you to fail a few times before you succeed.
The graphics are simple but effective, evoking the style of classic horror stories. The sound and music are also excellent, adding to the game’s eerie atmosphere. The voice acting is good, with characters like Carter bringing a touch of dark humor to the mix.
Overall, Edge of Sanity is a challenging and creepy survival horror game that uses its Lovecraftian influences well. It’s not the most difficult game if you’ve played similar titles, but it does use its ideas very effectively. I’d recommend trying it on the harder difficulty for a tougher and more engaging experience.
