Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1: Review

So, a whole week of sneaking around in cardboard boxes and dodging laser beams later, here’s my take on the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1. Heard whispers about this legendary series for ages, but never got around to playing it. Now, thanks to this collection, I finally jumped in, and let me tell you – it’s been a ride.

First off, the collection comes with five whole games! I started with the very first Metal Gear Solid, and whoa, did it grab me. The story’s a full-on spy mystery where you play as this cool dude named Solid Snake, sneaking into a secret base called Shadow Moses. Sounds simple, right? Wrong! It’s way more intense.

This game is all about stealth. Forget charging in guns blazing. You gotta be sneaky, watch the guards, hide in boxes (seriously, it’s awesome!), and stay hidden. It’s so satisfying when you manage to slip through an entire area without anyone spotting you. Talk about feeling like a secret agent!

But be warned, it ain’t easy! The fighting, while a bit clunky (hey, it’s an older game!), can be tough. Enemies are pretty smart and will hunt you down if you mess up. Luckily, you get a decent stash of weapons and gadgets to help you stay hidden and take down bad guys.

What really blew me away was the whole atmosphere of the game. The music is incredible, all tense and mysterious, making you feel like you’re in a real spy movie. The conversations are full of funny moments and surprising twists, and the characters are just fantastic. Solid Snake is this tough guy with a sense of humor, and the people around him, like Revolver Ocelot and Meryl, are so memorable.

Here’s the thing, these are old games. And even though they hold up pretty well, you can definitely tell their age. The graphics, even with a bit of an upgrade, aren’t anything mind-blowing. Especially in the earlier games, things can stutter a bit here and there.

The controls take some getting used to as well. They’re not as smooth and easy as newer games, but you can definitely learn them. Plus points for including the first two games in the series, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. It’s cool to see where the whole story started.

So, is Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 worth it? For fans of stealth games and good stories, absolutely! The story, characters, and atmosphere are totally awesome. But if you’re looking for super modern graphics and super smooth gameplay, you might be a little disappointed.

For me, as someone completely new to these games, it’s been a fantastic adventure. But if I had to recommend it to someone totally new to gaming in general, I might suggest starting with something a bit newer. Still, there’s something to be said for knowing the classics, right?

In the end, it’s your call. But if you dig spy thrillers and aren’t afraid to try older games, Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 will definitely pull you in. Just be prepared for a bit of a bumpy ride in terms of graphics and controls.
