The Witcher 1 and 2 Sales Finally Disclosed by CD Projekt

The Witcher series has long been regarded as one of the biggest success stories in the Polish games industry. For years, however, CD Projekt Red consistently avoided disclosing precise sales figures for the franchise’s older entries. That has now changed.

Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt, shared new data on social media in response to a list of the best-selling Polish video games. His post revealed concrete sales numbers for the first two installments of The Witcher series.

According to Nowakowski:

  • The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has sold 15 million copies
  • The Witcher (2007) has reached 10 million copies sold

Importantly, Nowakowski noted that both titles are still selling, despite having launched more than 13 and 18 years ago, respectively.

For comparison, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has now sold around 60 million copies worldwide. This makes it not only CD Projekt Red’s most successful release to date, but also one of the best-selling role-playing games in history.

The newly disclosed figures suggest that the success of The Witcher 3 was far from accidental. The first two games laid the groundwork for a strong global brand that steadily gained momentum over time, particularly through console releases and frequent digital promotions.

The sales performance of The Witcher and The Witcher 2 is even more striking when viewed in context. Both games launched with a niche audience, limited marketing budgets, and for a long time were available primarily on PC. Their long-term results highlight the durability of the brand and the effectiveness of CD Projekt Red’s long-tail sales strategy.

Today, The Witcher remains one of the most important symbols of the Polish game development scene, and the newly revealed numbers further confirm the franchise’s global reach.
