As someone who has played many submarine games over the years, from Hunter Killer on the Spectrum 48k to Silent Hunter, I was excited to play the UBOAT game. This WWII submarine simulator has come a long way since its early access release in 2019. Now, it’s a complete simulation that covers the Battle of the Atlantic and nearby waters.
A New Level of Detail
When I first tried UBOAT, it was promising but rough around the edges. Now, it’s clear that the developers have put in a lot of work. The game offers stunning graphics and a detailed U-Boat that you can explore from bow to stern. This level of detail makes the game feel very immersive.

You can play the game in different ways. If you don’t enjoy managing the crew, you can turn that feature off. This flexibility allows you to adjust the game to your preferences, whether you want a realistic challenge or a more relaxed experience.
Realistic and Engaging
UBOAT has set a new standard for submarine games. The graphics are the best I’ve seen in a sub sim, and the game does a good job of making you feel like you’re actually on a U-Boat. The game starts with smaller missions and gradually leads to larger and more complex battles, including big convoy fights that remind you of classic submarine movies like Das Boot.
Managing your crew is a big part of the game. It’s detailed, but not too overwhelming. You can choose how much control you want over your crew’s tasks, allowing you to focus more on strategy if you prefer.
Combat and Challenges

The combat in UBOAT is a highlight. The game features a sophisticated torpedo data computer (TDC) and realistic sounds that add to the tension during battles. I had a memorable experience when an unexpected attack near Tobruk resulted in casualties and a tense escape. These kinds of events make each mission feel unique.
However, there are some areas where UBOAT could improve. The game could use more variety in the types of ships you encounter, as the current options can become repetitive. The blueprint system for upgrading your submarine also needs more work, and the point system for buying upgrades feels a bit too easy.

UBOAT: Overall, UBOAT is a really good submarine simulator. It goes beyond many previous games with its detailed graphics, realistic gameplay, and engaging missions. While it has some issues that need addressing, it offers a rich experience for those interested in submarine warfare. – Tom Henry
If you’re curious about life aboard a WWII submarine and enjoy strategic gameplay, UBOAT is worth checking out. It might not be perfect, but it’s one of the best submarine simulators available today.
